Mexico City is an emerging destination for foreign visitors looking to receive state-of-the-art medical treatments they cannot get in their home countries.
Mexico City recently announced the construction of a world-class center for biomedical and nanomedical research called Campus Biometropolis. It will be integrated with the National Autonomous University of Mexico, the top Spanish-speaking university in the world. The Campus Biometropolis will be sustainably designed and include hospitals, laboratories and medical universities, as well as residential and retail areas.
Mayor Marcelo Ebrard announces the Campus Biometropolis in December 2009.
This investment will position Mexico City as a knowledge capital and a global hub of scientific and technological excellence. The state-of-the-art research and development center will attract pharmaceutical and biomedical companies from around the world and provide a platform for world-class clinical research and medical services.
The Research and Development Center will focus on six areas of medical research and care: cancer, nutrition, care of the aging, cardiovascular, infectious diseases and pharmaceuticals. Given its close proximity to corporate laboratories, universities, start-ups and public research institutions, it will offer an environment to accelerate product development and commercialization.
The research complex, scheduled to begin construction in mid-2010, has been designed by the internationally-acclaimed architectural firm, Foster + Partners, whose previous works include the Hearst Tower in New York City and Berlin’s Reichstag building. The sustainably designed campus will include a natural reserve and become a model for green building and electricity and water conservation. This project goes in accordance with Mayor Ebrard’s plan to transform the city into one of the most environmentally-conscience and sustainable cities in the world.
Jose Antonio Matezans has been a professor of history at the National University of Mexico in Mexico City for 42 years, The National University is highly regarded worldwide and with more than 300,000 students and 30,000 professors, it provides an excellent environment for learning. watch video
